"Main reason why elephants come to rural and agricultural lands in search of water and food is, their original water sources have been closed down," said K K Karunanidhi one of the petitioners.

"There should be physical and visible separation with signage across ghats and plains of elephant habitat and buffer zones, so that anyone can detect an encroachment," says R Senthilkumar, another petitioner.
